"Nature is my instinct, stone is my light, sculpture is my voice."
about andrea
The story of a dreamer
Andrea Serra was born in 1981, in Lecce, “La signora del Barocco”, cradles him every day of his life.
In his house beauty is the main protagonist, his grandad carved wood and his mum was an art teacher.
When He was a kid the noise of scalpels and hammers woke him up every day, he spent his days watching his grandad work and since than that noise became a melody to his ears.
His Grandad will gift him the tools that will change his life completely: a small hammer and a little scalpel. His grandad shared his art form and his life with his nephew, who absorbed every word coming out of his grandad ‘ s mouth.
Andrea, growing up. Breathing and dealing every day with art, created his art form.
In Lecce ‘s countryide, he got in touch with the element that will change his artistic career: the stone.
The first figure created by Andrea on this element was a cat, and since than the animals became the protagonists of his work.
The shapes of his animals were smooth, free and magnificent. His first art exhibition, Lo Zoo di Andrea, was hosted in his village.
Andrea studied in Accademia Delle Belle Arti, during his studies he learnt the theory of many artistic movements, but for what concerns the techniques he never had to learn from anyone. He was an artist since he was born, his hands created beauty every time he created new shapes and got in touch with new tools.
Andrea travelled a lot during his life; his trips helped him open his mind and mainly his heart. He let his feelings and senses absorbe everything he was surrounded from. Travelling helped him build up his creative impulse and his art vision. Even when He was far from home, the sea and the sound of the water were a great form of inspiration for him.
Andrea, while sitting on the shore listening to the sound of the waves, He imagines in his artistic mind new shapes and new objects to create. He looks at the sun reflecting on the sea, He stands up and only now He feels the need to go back to his art studio, working and modeling his stone.
Serra carves, smoothes, blows away the dust, creates new shapes and transmit erotic and sensual vibes.
Salento is a magic land. Time stops there, he gets in touch with nature, He feels it, he listens to it, and They create and they spread beauty.
This is what nature represents to him, an unbreakable symbiosis, an exchange of energy and forces that Andrea creates with his rudimentary tools.
“That is because I get in touch with everything that surrounds me, I feel the nature vibes during my creations, I have the possibility to work that magic stone, hidden by the sea, twisted with fossils, seashells, fishes and plants. I always try to not change the inner nature of this element.”
Andrea has a bonk connection with his land, It inspires him creating new works. If You ask him what his dream is He will answer: Nature and love, feelings. He tries to share with his works what nature tries to share with us but we can not see.
If we admire one of his works surrounded by nature, his dream becomes reality. His creative soul connects him with stone, leading his hands and mind during the creation of his works.
During this creative process everything that surrounds him disappear. The only elements existing are his hands, his creativity, his touch and the works hat he wants to shape. The force of this process is as strong as his scalpel and hammer creating and shaping. His sculptures have their own soul. His breath is a wind puff, it catches you and it gifts you that feeling that unsettles your feelings.
It fills your heart and gaze, you can feel the power and the relation created between Andrea and nature. You will experience many feelings admiring his works: passion, joey, apprehension, sensuality, light and darkness. He does not inspire to the sculptors of the past; his real teachers and inspirations are nature and music. These two lead his hands during the creative process building and shaping his loved stone.
He expresses himself with his sculpture and design, the Lecce’s stone is his way to share his feelings. Every Serra’s work is exclusive.
His works are famous and known worldwide, Andrea is a young artist but his art already feels really mature. He presents his works in many parts of the world. Collectors gives a great relevance to Andrea’s works; the critics admire the feelings and the sensations created by Andrea’s works.
His design works, always created using his ancient technique, inspired by nature and shaped with his artistic techniques are beautiful and stunning to admire. Andrea Serra abandons himself to creation, sculpture is his soul. His first need is “I must sculpt”. His need is primordial and complex. It can be defined primordial because his need is innate and complex for all the sensations and feelings that He shares. He always says that his works are not rich of details, but they are full of sensations and core.
In fact, the core of his works is really strong, It opens new artistic perspectives and the feelings shared are an explosion of richness, details and stories. His works are enjoyable from every perspective, as a contemporary Rodin. They attract your sight and You get lost admiring the shapes and the beauty of the details.
Serra gets in touch with the world, he smiles and he is always generous. When He sculpts, He is guided by the most elementary sensations. Love fills his heart with joey, He stops, He wants to feel everything that comes out from his works. Serra does not want only to share beauty thanks to his work’s shapes, He also wants to tell stories with his sculptures, where the Nature is the real protagonist. In many of his works nature is dominant, decides everything. The sea dominates you; It can bring you in the darkness with his power, but at the same time It can please your senses with his sound. In this perfect storm the primordial feelings, the ones that make the men and the sculptor alive, are the main character. Andrea represents himself perfectly with his art.
The details of his work, the shapes and their harmony, are a joey for who admires them. When Serra sculpts time stops, everything that surrounds him is suspended during his creative process. His tools work and shape perfectly Lecce’s stone, his hands are guided by feelings and nature and they create eternal beauty.
His work can overwhelm who admires them; they are crashed by emotions, You can not stop them and you are suspended by the hypnosis of a song of the mermaid and the need of getting absorbed by beauty.
Today Andrea’s creations can be admired in several galleries all over the world.
